Former Dortmund midfielder Michael Rummenigge says that he can not find answers for why the 2014 World Cup winner has fought to meet his potential.
Mario Gotze has been advised he should consider joining a club such as Everton or West Ham and that he must give up with posting on social websites to be able to help focus on salvaging his career.
The Borussia Dortmund celebrity was called out by Michael Rummenigge, who himself played for the Bundesliga side and Bayern Munich previously, together with the 56-year-old questioning his off-field attitude.
Gotze, who memorably scored for Germany within their 2014 World Cup final victory, re-joined Dortmund from Bayern in 2016 but has struggled to reach his full potential, because of both injuries and a lack of form.
Speaking in his weekly column at Sportbuzzer, Rummenigge, who won three titles with Bayern during his playing days, gave his view on Gotze and provided some advice for him moving forward.
He wrote: “When I give lectures, I show the audience one scene in the end – Mario Gotze’s goal at the 2014 World Cup final. I see a smile on the faces and I love that, too.
“At exactly the exact same time, I feel a little depressed. I wonder what’s happened since then. What happened to the outstanding soccer player who could do everything? I can not find answers to those questions. Probably just Mario Gotze himself can locate them.
When he went to Munich in the summer of 2013, his development wasn’t yet complete.
“He must change some things. He lost his pace and ought to alter his game, be more of a playmaker. He’s no striker.
He added: “I am thinking [he could combine ] clubs such as Everton or West Ham or some Italian middle-of-the-table club.
